This project was started by Susan Thompson, a friend of Laverne's. Susan Thompson was a fisheries biologist from Canada who retired at the age of 50 and lived in Kenya for 6 months of each year. She taught fish farming (amongst other projects) while she is there. Sadly Susan passed away in 2012. But her project lives on! Dave and Laverne continue to support Fish4Kenya through assistance with curriculum enhancement, connections and financial support. They hope to visit the project again soon.
If you wish to join us this is an amazing opportunity to travel to Kenya and not only experience Susan's work first hand, but be part of the work on the ground and share your skills! Fish4Kenya is located in Western Province, Kenya in the small community of Kakamega. Kakamega is very much “off the beaten track” and you might not see another tourist during your whole time as a volunteer. Fish4Kenya has a variety of projects that, depending on your interests, you could be involved with.
Fish Farming Project
assist in pond construction, this includes digging and can be muddy;
assist in building small hatcheries (pouring concrete, digging, putting up a structure);
assist in laying pipes;
putting up fences;
Teaching some aspect of the fish farmers training course. Not all the training program is about fish. There is a need for bookkeeping, managing money, record keeping, micro-loan training.
Bicycle Project
Fish4Kenya received $2,000 dollars from an organization in California (http://www.wheels4life.org/stories/) so they could buy bikes for deserving individuals. They have enough money to select 17 more people for a bicycle. Either fish farmers or students can be selected. Volunteers could assist in interviewing and selecting deserving individuals.
Tailoring School
assist in painting and repairing the classroom;
assist in repairing sewing machines;
assist in teaching students;
Assist the teacher in book keeping and record keeping training.
Women Fish Farmers Support Group
A number of women fish farmers have approached Susan to provide a small loan so they can create warming baskets for food that they will make and sell. A number of these women have other ideas for projects and need some help in planning and doing them. They also need skills in learning book-keeping, banking and record keeping.
Feed Distributor
Fish4Kenya works with a feed distributor in Kisumu who might need some assistance in logistics on production, computer training and bookkeeping and record keeping. He runs a small restaurant and can certainly have some support and advice on how to make it better and more successful.
Primary School Feeding Program
Susan set up a small feeding program with the teachers, parents and Headmaster of a small primary school in Kakamega. There is a need to assist with purchasing food and ensuring it is delivered to the school, assist the cooks with preparing meals and distributing to students. The school is very basic and funds are minimal and the headmaster would be open to assistance at the school. Even assisting with students English or other subjects would be welcomed on a short term basis.
